Why becoming an adult bat or mitzvah might change your life: A new Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah class is starting this October 2010! As Judy Sheppard said in the Voice when she celebrated her bat mitzvah last year: The unexpected thing that I learned about myself is that I really like chanting Torah -- it's exciting, invigorating and connects me to the thousands of years that our people have been chanting Torah. At first I didn't like the trope. I think I was scared of it. Now, I see it as truly beautiful and magical since I love to sing. This year, the first Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah class will be on Thursday night, October 14 at 6pm-7pm. We will meet every Thursday night except for November 25, December 23, & February 24. Our class ends with a Saturday morning Shabbat service on April 30 at 10:30 am at which time you will be called to the Torah as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah. The Torah portion will be Kedoshim, the Torah's code of holiness. Our focus will be on learning Hebrew, chanting the trope, and understanding the order and meaning of the prayer service. Hearing adults chant Torah and present a drash is one of the highlights of the year. There is a $500 fee for this class - please contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The summer has come to a close. 5771 is nearly upon us. Join us for a night of introspective questioning and a collective look towards the new year. Together we will change the mantels on the Torah to white, we'll sing and we'll reflect back and look ahead to a good year.
Sunday, October 24: Save the date and look for more information coming soon.
