Our Shabbat Welcomers are a group of people who volunteer to welcome people as they arrive for services on Shabbat. Welcomers generally arrive about half an hour to 45 minutes before services start. Some of the things the Welcomers do include:
• Saying "Shabbat shalom" to people as they arrive • Finding seats for disabled people or others who need help • Passing out hearing devices and large print prayer books to those who need them • Passing out activity bags to parents with children • Showing parents where childcare is on Friday nights • Answering questions • Identifying newcomers and helping them to find someone to chat with before services • Setting out extra chairs when the seats in the sanctuary are full • Passing out prayer books and programs • Using umbrellas to escort people to and from their cars when it's raining
If you would like to be a Shabbat Welcomer, please let us know. You can welcome just once to try it out, or twice a year, or once a month, or whatever fits your schedule. If you would like to be a Welcomer but can't stand for very long, we have a stool available for you to sit on. For more information about welcoming, please contact Susan Barnes at
