A Musical Evening with Jeremiah Lockwood

Monday, December 12, 2022 18 Kislev 5783

6:00 PM - 7:30 PMOsher Marin JCC, please register below.

Join us for an intimate evening of music, storytelling, and conversation! Born into a cantorial family, musician and scholar Jeremiah Lockwood has a long history of reverently subverting the legacy of Jewish sacred music.

In this private event for the Rodef Sholom community, Jeremiah will discuss the role of cantors as stars of mass media in the early 20th century and the ways in which new outlets for performance allowed people with outsider identities to perform roles of sacred authority. PLEASE REGISTER BELOW TO ATTEND.

Jeremiah’s current research project focuses on the khazentes, women cantors of the gramophone era, and their surprising turn as stars of the cantorate, but with careers firmly planted outside of the synagogue.

Combining live music performance, storytelling, deep listening to old records, and conversation, this event will offer a provocative and pleasurable entry into the world of early 20th century Jewish American musical life and its echoes into the present day.

Sorry, Registration has ended.
