Sha'arei Shalom
Cemetery

Sha'arei Shalom Cemetery is located high on a knoll in San Rafael, surrounded by softly rolling hills. Its lovely setting offers magnificent views of the Bay and Mt. Tamalpais. It is truly an ideal choice for those who love natural beauty.

History

In 1988, Congregation Rodef Sholom formed a committee to fulfill a deeply felt need for a Jewish cemetery in Marin. After exploring a number of sites, a beautifully serene, unspoiled area was selected in San Rafael within the long-established Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery.

Early in 1989, after negotiations were completed, an access road was built, the site was cleared and leveled, an irrigation system was installed, and a lawn was planted. The initial response to this genuine need was overwhelming, both from the congregation and the Jewish community at large. Over 100 sites were reserved during the first three months alone! As of early 1991, there were approximately 200 pre-need sites reserved.
